Many of our clients have long established onsite mailservers and one of their major concerns when considering an online hosted exchange server is the potential for data loss.
Fortunately Microsoft provides a detailed migration dashboard in their exchange administration center that allows you to migrate mailboxes and mail content from your on-site messaging system to your online exchange and Office 365 platform.
Products covered include IMAP messaging systems, Exchange 2003, Exchange 2007, Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2013. If you are running any of these systems, we can help you migrate your data across to the hosted option.
If you are making the move for your entire email system then you will probably make a staged Exchange migration where batches of mailboxes are moved over, perhaps over several weeks or even months if that makes sense. This option is supported for earlier versions up to and including 2007.
For later versions a remote move migration will be used and this requires an Exchange hybrid deployment.
Here’s a table from Microsoft that compares the different options:
Existing organization | mailboxes to migrate | manage user accounts in your on-site organization | Migration type |
---|---|---|---|
Exchange 2013, Exchange 2010, Exchange 2007, or Exchange 2003 | Less than 2,000 mailboxes | No | Cutover Exchange migration |
Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2003 | Less than 2,000 mailboxes | No | Staged Exchange migration |
Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2003 | More than 2,000 mailboxes | Yes | Staged Exchange migration or remote move migration in an Exchange hybrid deployment |
Exchange 2013 or Exchange 2010 | More than 2,000 mailboxes | Yes | Remote move migration in an Exchange hybrid deployment |
Exchange 2000 Server or earlier versions | No maximum | Yes | IMAP migration |
Non-Exchange on-premises messaging system | No maximum | Yes | IMAP migration |
As you can see there is a certain amount of complexity involved in each migration. If you would like to discuss your next move, please give us a call or use our contact page to get in touch.
